For my "Identity" project I cut out various images of Coldplay sheet music and glued them down with gel medium on a canvas. Next, I sketched and cut out my silhouette cameo by tracing a picture of myself and cutting it out. Finally, I held down the cut-out silhouette while painting over the canvas with watery acrylic blue paint. I interpreted the theme of identity by incorporating one of my favorite things - music. Music is a huge part of my life and gives me so much joy. I also love mixed media which is why I liked painting over the text. I felt that the project was extremely applicable to me because it shows myself (as a silhouette) covered and surrounded by some of my favorite songs. Coldplay's beautiful lyrics and music inspired me during this project as well as pictures I saw on Pinterest. I loved seing sheet music incorporated into art projects and decided that's what I wanted to do. I also love making collages. :)
When people look at my work, I want they to think "Hey, this girl really likes music." I want them to realize that I am surrounded by music and that my head is always filled with song lyrics and melodies. I want them to understand the precedence music takes in my life. I also want them to reflect on what role music plays in their life and why it is essential.
I really loved the idea I came up with for my art project. I loved incorporating mixed media with my favorite meaningful songs and painting around myself. However, I feel that it takes the eye a while to realize that the bold, white middle is a silhouette cameo. I honestly wish I cut out a picture of myself in a bun in order to make it more clear. Also, it looks like there is too much going on inside the cameo with all of the music which attracts the eye to the middle, while they should be looking at the outline and realizing it's a silhouette. I feel that, other than the silhouette being hard to see, the project went very smoothly. I loved mixing the acrylic paint and love how one can faintly see the sheet music through the blue. Overall, this has been my favorite project to make and I am proud of how accurately it represent my identity.
